How To Use A Stovetop Espresso Maker

Let’s be honest, here. You may love to have a morning cup of espresso before you head off to work or after dinner as a digestif, but you may like having to pay exorbitant prices for it. That’s okay because anyone can make espresso—if they learn how to use a stovetop espresso maker. And it’s probably a lot easier than you may think, so let’s go over the basic steps to making your own espresso at home with a stovetop maker, shall we?

Step #1: Gather Your Equipment

The first thing that you’re going to want to do is to gather your equipment. This means not only having the best stovetop espresso maker available, but also the coffee and some finely filtered water. Oh, and of course, a stovetop for actually brewing the espresso. If you’re grinding your own coffee beans (which you should), then you’ll also need a grinder.

Before we start, however, it should be noted that what we’re going to be using to make espresso is a Moka pot—after all, that’s the way that you make espresso on the stovetop. Yes, there are probably millions of baristas out there who will quickly say that this isn’t true espresso, but that’s okay. We’ll just have to agree to disagree, I suppose. That’s because in our estimation, using a Moka pot to make espresso is just as good (if not better) than using a big, fancy espresso machine. Okay, enough with espresso semantics, let’s move on to Step 2.

Step #2: Load Up The Moka Pot

Take the top of the lid off of the Moka pot and remove the filter basket from the device. After that’s been done, fill it with distilled water until it’s just at the level of the pot’s round safety valve. Place the filter basket back on the pot and then fill it with medium ground coffee. Always make sure that the coffee grounds are at the same level as the top of the filter. Make sure to use a coffee spoon to level out the coffee grounds, but be sure not to press down on them. Make sure there’s no coffee ground residue around the edge of the filter basket and then put the lid back on the pot.

Step #3: Begin Brewing The Espresso

Take your Moka pot and place it on the stove. Turn on the flame and make sure that it isn’t larger than the diameter of the pot’s bottom. After a few minutes, the espresso maker is going to gurgle, and coffee is going to begin to bubble out of it. When that happens, turn down the stove’s flame. Now allow the pot to sit, so the rest of the coffee can percolate through it. You’ll know the espresso is done when just steam emerges from the spout of the Moka pot.

How To Clean Your Stovetop Espresso Maker

Now that you’ve finished making espresso on the stovetop, it’s time to clean the pot. Fortunately, cleaning these pots are just as simple as making espresso in them, as long as you keep a few things in mind while you do so.

  • Make sure the pot is cool
  • Remove the spent coffee grinds
  • Empty out the remaining coffee
  • Rinse the pot out with warm water
  • Go over it with a sponge, if desired
  • Make sure to thoroughly dry it.
  • Congratulations, your espresso maker is now clean.
