One secret that coffee aficionados have known for a long time is that your coffee grinder matters. People will obsess over the type of coffee beans they’re using, the process by which their coffee machine will brew and even the quality of the water but they’ll ignore how those beans are ground. They just use the old blade grinder at their local grocery store and don’t give it a moment’s thought. And that’s a big mistake.

While the grinder at your local grocery store might be decent for grinding average generic coffee it’s not the best coffee bean grinder. In fact, it’s not even close. Which is why you should take control of your coffee and get one of the home bean grinders. That way you can maintain control over how the beans are ground and most home coffee grinders are way better than that big machine in your local store.

However, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be careful. There are a few things to consider before buying one of these machines and they aren’t all equal. You’ll want to buy the best coffee bean grinder available so that your coffee is as good as it can be. To help you out, some of the better models available are listed below.

The Best Coffee Bean Grinder – Reviews

10Ninja Electric Coffee Grinder SP7407

The Ninja Electric Coffee Grinder SP7407 is an inexpensive and easy-to-use electric coffee grinder with stainless steel blades and nearly automatic operation. It can be used as a counter-top model or held in the hand and features 1-button operation.

Its quick yet fairly quiet blades will make short work of your coffee grinds and you can easily see when they’re ready to be removed thanks to its clear see-through lid. While it would’ve been nice if this unit had some presets that could be used for grinding, it’s easy enough to get the ground level you want by simply watching through the top. It also would’ve been nice if this unit was easier to clean. Like most grinders, it has the problem of static-cling and this makes it hard to remove all of the grounds. A problem that can be compounded by the fact that the blades can’t be removed.

However, despite those two small flaws, this unit is still a great unit for grinding coffee beans or for use at the home bar. It may not be as precise as some models but it does get the job done. Overall, it’s a nice unit that won’t break the bank.

Pros:

  • Grinds well
  • Inexpensive
  • Easy-to-use
  • Quiet

Cons:

  • Non-removable blade
  • No-preset grinds

9Capresso Infinity 560.01 Conical Burr Grinder

The Capresso Infinity 560.01 is a coffee bean grinder that looks like a little food processor. It has a clear compartment on top and has a base with a dial that has settings from 0 to 10. Also in the base is a window that allows you to see the grounds once they’ve been ground.

It’s a nice coffee grinder that uses conical burr blades to grind the coffee and this does produce a nice fine coffee ground. However, while this machine ground the coffee to a fine enough level it leaves a little bit to be desired when trying to do a coarser cut.

Another thing to mention about this grinder is that its blades are slower than most other electric grinders – operating at about 420 RPMs. Some people prefer a slower running blade while other people may prefer a blade that operates at a higher speed.

Pros:

  • Conical steel burrs
  • Built-in-timer
  • Easy-to-use
  • Clear top
  • Clear bottom window

Cons:

  • Coarse setting isn’t coarse enough

7Kuissential Manual Coffee Mill

The Kuissential Manual Coffee Mill is a coffee grinder for those who would rather hand crank their coffee than use an electric grinder. This means that it’s not only quieter than most other electric ones but that it also grinds the beans slowly – which is the preferred method of grinding for some people.

Different grind sizes can be easily dialed into the grinder by turning an internal screw either clockwise or counter-clockwise depending on whether you want a fine or coarse grind. Another great feature about this grinder is that since it’s hand cranked the coffee grounds are usually more consistent, although it also means more manual labor to get your morning coffee done.

  • Quieter than other grinders
  • Conical steel burrs
  • Not expensive

Blade Grinders Versus Burr Grinders

A question that’s frequently asked is what’s the difference between a blade coffee grinder and a burr coffee grinder. A blade grinder has a blade that looks a lot like the blade in your blender and basically spins around as it chops the beans. A conical burr grinder has two abrasive surfaces which grind down the coffee.

So which one is the best, you may ask? While there are a number of differences between these two types of grinders, it really boils down to cost and uniformity. Blade grinders are usually less expensive but they also don’t grind the beans as uniformly as a conical or flat burr grinder. Burr grinders on the other hand are more expensive but they also deliver a more uniform grind.

A more important thing to consider, in my opinion, is not whether the grinder has blades or burrs but whether these blades or burrs are made of stainless-steel or are made of ceramic. While both ceramic and stainless-steel are good options for grinders, ceramic ones tend to not disrupt the flavor profile of the beans as stainless-steel ones do.

Of course, the type of blades a grinder has is only one of the things that need to be considered before purchasing one. Costs, how noisy it is and additional features are other things that might need to be considered as well. If you take all of these into consideration – including blade type – then your chances of finding the right grinder for your coffee increases dramatically.
